AL MUNTAZIR WEEK

The Al Muntazir Schools’ have been joyously celebrating the Birth of our 12th Holy Imam (ATFS) dedicating the week 26th – 30th July 2010 to him as The Al Muntazir Week. The theme for this year was ‘Promoting Education That Inspires’. In the course of the week, the students were fully engaged in various activities related to the promoting education.

These activities included Maths Activities that took place everyday in a special Math Wizard Room, Stationary & Book stalls during break time, Art Work with the Grade 7 students, Health Check Ups where the school nurse checked for proper body hygiene of every student. Students also engaged in creating bookmarks, cards & key chains for our 12th Holy Imam (atfs). A dental check up was organized by Ebrahim Haji Health Centre for all Lower Primary students at GPS.

“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.” — Mary Lou Cook

This year, the Grade 7’s let go of their inner artists and got creative. With the assistance of their teachers they worked together in making different pieces of art using canvases. Each class was given a theme on which they worked with great effort and produced brilliant work. Four themes were assigned which include African Paintings, Sand & Grain Work, Mirror Art & Recycled items.

The students put their heads together coming up with ideas that truly impressed their teachers. Ideas such as creating an education tree using compact disks as recycled materials, creating a scenery that included a tree using grains, drawing a flower out of broken mirrors and using fabric & ornaments as part of an African Painting.

The outcome was so remarkable that the school displayed all the art pieces during the grand assembly on Friday. Parents and students were very pleased with the talent of the grade 7’s and did not hesitate in praising their work. Parents are most welcome to visit the photo gallery where more photos are displayed.

The culmination of the weeklong celebration was marked by a Grand Assembly held on Friday 30th July 2010, at the Girls Primary Campus. Parents and Invited Guests arrived early morning as the students gathered for beginning the weeks’ most awaited event.

The Program started with the Recitation of the Holy Quran as is the norm in all our school events followed by the National Anthem & Dua e Hujjat which included the Flag raising Ceremony by the Guest of Honour Mrs. Fatim Dewji who is a known personality and a religious speaker in our Community.

A spirited Spelling Bee competition was then held by the students of the Grade 7’s against their parents and teachers which brought a lot of buzz and excitement from the audience who eagerly watched and cheered the participants. The parents bagged the title of the winners of this competition as the students boasted that their parents were after all their teachers.

A Puppet Show was presented by the grade 7’s in effort of saving the environment in which they encouraged everyone to be careful with their environment.

Another highlight of this program was the award presented to the longest serving staff of the school. Mama Maua, Mrs. Premji, Mrs. Joan and Mrs. Alishan were presented these awards by Dr. Mrs. Nazima Dharsee.

The program concluded with winners of the ‘Maths Wizard’, ‘Spelling Bee’ and ‘The Family Art Competition’ being awarded by the Guest Of Honour.

It had been a wonderful week of excitement………….. Asante Sana to everyone for making this year’s Al Muntazir Week a Great Success! We pray to the almighty for the quick re-appearance of The Mahdi (ATFS) – Ameen

SHOPPING TO THEIR HEART’S CONTENT

The learners of grades 5 and 6 had a very enjoyable and exciting outing on Wednesday, 3rd March and Thursday, 4th March when they went to The Syrian and International Trade Exhibition at The Diamond Jubilee Hall with their teachers. The young children were so excited to go shopping without their Mummies and Daddies that they could barely wait to reach the venue.

The girls first had a look around at all the displays and then came down to the serious part of spending their money wisely.

It was amazing to see the children bargain with the shopkeepers, calculating the right amount to spend and making sure that they were not over charged.

Girls being natural nurturers bought things for their little brothers and sisters at home and for their parents as well.

They also learnt about communicating with strangers confidently and crossing the language barrier by making the shop keepers understand with sign language about what they wanted and how much they wanted to pay for it!!

The teachers were so proud to see their young charges behaving so responsibly and maturely. They were kept busy dispensing advice to the students on the correct sizes of shirts and skirts and unobtrusively making sure that the girls didn’t go over board and that the children got a good deal during their shopping adventure!!

A fun filled learning experience brought out the self-assurance and the confidence of our young students.

EID PROGRAMME WITH SPECIAL GUESTS

And be steadfast in prayer and regular in charity: and whatever good you send forth for your souls before you, you shall find it with Allah: for Allah sees well all that you do. [2: Al-Baqara-110]

In the continuing spirit of our last year’s theme “Spreading Happiness amongst Mankind”, Al Muntazir Primary Schools celebrated a double Eid with their less fortunate brethrens on Friday, 25th September, 2009. The guests accompanied by their care takers arrived at the Girls Primary School campus at 10:00 am, where students of Grade 6 and 7 with their teachers were waiting to welcome them warmly with an entertaining program set for the whole day. The children looked so smart and beautiful. They came from different age groups, the youngest being a 3 month old cute baby boy named Saidi. He soon became the most sought after, with the GPS girls lining up to take turns to hold him.

Joan, the lower primary coordinator at GPS was the MC par excellence. She along with Mrs.Iffet received the young ones in the hall and put our special guests at ease. Two young visitors were invited to start off the day with prayers, followed by a Unity song “sisi sote ni ndugu”, by the GPS girls which was taken up by all the children in the audience. The hall was reverberating with their young, strong voices singing” sisi sote ni ndugu …watoto wa baba mmoja”. This was followed by Qasidas recited by the GPS girls. Sheikh Salim the religion teachers from BPS narrated to the children a poignant story on good ethics and behavior. After the prayers and story time the boys went to the field to play football along with Sheikh Salim, Mr.Hashim and Mr. Richard.

The girls took part in a range of games like dog and the bone, finding the marbles, skipping and basket ball under the charge of Teachers Teddy and Liberetha. The children enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

Time flew by and Salaat time was announced. Children cooled down with an ice lolly before a scrumptious feast of delicious Biryani, mouth watering samosas and jalebis with sodas to wash it all down! Children chose to laze, play lightly or sit around to chat with their new found friends.

The best part was left for the last!! Each child received a gift package to make the day memorable. They were overjoyed and excited to receive a big school bag, a big jar of biscuits, skipping rope and a pair of kangas to take home.

PRESENTATION ON FIRST AID CARE

On Tuesday 21st April 2009, Dr. Tully Saidi, a qualified First Aid provider was invited to visit the Al Muntazir Girls Primary School to enlighten the students from the Lower Primary on ‘FIRST AID’ Care.

Dr. Tully is a Parent of Fatma Said, studying at the Girls Primary School. She showed practical examples, and explained to the children how to provide simple emergency care when required.

She visually explained ways of handling different injuries and emergencies, and brought to the children’s attention personal safety and importance of self cleanliness.

Dr. Tully then explained to the children, the consequences of providing careless first aid that can endanger not only to the victim but also to themselves; she warned them about the deadly virus - AIDS that can be transmitted very easily to a person giving First Aid where injuries involve open wounds.

In addition to the positive benefits of providing First Aid, the children also learned how to take care of themselves and others in this capacity. The student’s enthusiasm for learning first aid spoke for itself!

The Principal, Staff and Students of the Girls Lower Primary School, would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Tully for sharing her knowledge with the students and we hope to see more Parents taking up the opportunity to share their knowledge with our students, in different areas and promote the young minds’ interest in the quest of learning. AN EXUBERANT TRIP TO THE ZOO!

“Who’s taller? The giraffe or me?” Said Sayyeda standing on her toes. “Who’s stronger, the elephant or me?” said Sarah trying to lift the teacher’s desk. Who’s more beautiful? The deer or me?” Added Salha with a shy smile!

To calm the curious little grade ones down, miss Khadija made an announcement, “Settle down my dears, I have great news…all of us will be paying a visit to the Dar es salaam zoo on the 11th and 12th of February!....”

Before she could finish her statement, all the students jumped and squealed with joy “YAAAAAY” – with the biggest of smiles across their faces! And for the grade ones, the day had finally come. This was their first ever trip since they started their year at AMGPS, so they were all pretty much excited.

Roar!! Cuckle!! neigh neigh!! twit twit….and it went on to chatter chatter!!

The grade 1s had a great opportunity of visiting the Dar es Salaam zoo, which is situated at Kibada area in Kigamboni.

The pontoon ride was an exciting adventure as the children crossed the ocean on a big floating ferry! Still looking forward to another journey, singing and eating snacks was part of the fun. The girls enjoyed every sight of natural plantation and beautiful bungalows along the long rough road across the ferry.

The children arrived at the zoo…It was a beautiful day out, so much to see and experience. They were on their best behavior. The girls were very impressed with the huge area of land that surrounded them ready to be explored, anxiously waiting for the guide to take them around and make friends with the animals. At each turn, flowers, trees, herbs, shrubs, animals and birds were seen and heard making the children imitate the sounds and actions.

Among the animals seen were zebras, hyenas, porcupine, crocodiles and the king of the jungle, the Lion! The domestic animals included the donkeys, camels, cows, horses, ducks and hens. Among the flamingoes, pelicans and ostrich, was the most interesting secretary bird. It derived its name due to its business like appearance and restlessness.

The children learnt a lot about the animal family, conservation, behavior and their habitat. It was an educating and interesting trip appreciated by both the Teachers and the children.

GRADE 1 – ORIENTATION DAY

Here we are again at the start of a new promising year with the grade ones!!

The class room placement is a fantastic puzzle whereby the students are all eager to know what classroom they will call home for the school year.

The registration desk was busy collecting and giving information such as medical form, information on collecting and drop off point, dismissal times, school expectations etc.

The parents had a chance to meet their child’s teacher during registration. When teachers and parents meet at the beginning of the year, they are both better prepared to work together in the best interests of the child.

A short assembly was organized to acquaint the children into the day to day activities of the school. Their teachers were introduced to them and later settled in respective classrooms. Various activities to familiarize the children with were conducted followed by a break time.

The children then went on an exciting school tour. Eyes and ears all wide open to see and hear all about the different rooms that they will be visiting whilst at school giving them a variety learning program as in computers, library, art , sports etc.

Quite a short day for such a wonderful school! Every possible effort was made to provide a safe and relatively efficient pick up point and the parents were requested to co-operate in order to ensure a safe and comfortable environmental practice.

Welcome to the AMGPS Community, grade ones!!!

A small gathering was arranged with the grade 7 girls in the School Hall, thereafter followed a program presented by the girls on various lessons learnt from the tragedy of Kerbala. Zakira Kanize Zainab reflected on the lessons learnt and urged the girls to keep up the practice of always standing for truth, justice and to be rightful and honest at all times. She also emphasized on obedience to Parents and Teachers, the habit of which would lead to a disciplinary upliftment in the society.

She impressed the girls with her flow of knowledge and she advised the girls to purify their inner souls in order to be successful in life. Adorning one with the attire of positive attitude would lead others too, in implementation and practice bringing unity and peace in the environment we live in.

A token of appreciation was presented to Zakira Kanize Zainab by Mrs. Iffet Thawer – IRE Head of Department. She then went on a short tour of the School and was deeply impressed on the environment, composure and commitment of the teachers that she observed in the classrooms.

GRADE 7 PREPARE FOR NATIONAL EXAMINATIONS

“Booster Lessons Reinforce Effectiveness”

Most students need extra help in some subjects that is why we, at Al Muntazir Primary Schools, emphasize strongly that our students attend the Booster classes for the core five subjects taught at school. Booster lessons convert positive trends gained from the initial lessons into statistically significant changes.

We use a team of instructors to deliver our booster prep course — each one teaching in his or her area of expertise. The 60-minute booster lessons, delivered over two consecutive weeks, starting from June 23, 2008 reinforced materials learned the previous years. As in the core curriculum, the booster lessons support three main goals:

Focus –students are kept focused on the key concepts and problem solving skills that are tested in the exams.

Motivation and Teamwork - working with familiar instructors and classmates keeps you motivated and that “we’re all in this together” spirit really helps boost morale.

Feedback - In class practice, mini tests tell the team where the strengths and weaknesses of the children lie.

With the intense preparation prior to the examinations, we wish all our candidates the best results to make the school and the parents proud.

NEW MACHINES FOR THE COMPUTER LAB

Al Muntazir Schools were gifted 32 new computers by the family of Marhum Firoz Dharsee, 17 of which went to the GPS Computer Laboratory.

A soft opening ceremony was conducted on Friday June 13, 2008. The spirit of donation by the family shows their goodwill for helping the Institution in it’s strive to provide quality education facilities to the students, and is appreciated by the Board & the Secretariat.

The latest design of flat-screen monitors and machines gives a vibrant new look to the laboratory. Mr. Hussein Dharsee commended the setup of the laboratory and felt that it would morally motive the students.

15 of the new computers went to the A3 Institute Of Professional Studies which is embarking upon a very important step towards teaching BTECH (British Accredited Vocational Qualification) courses for the very first time in Tanzania!

The Central Board of Education thanks the Dharsee family for their support to the school in the upliftment of educational resources for our children.

BUDDY READING

Friends for Life start out here…

On Friday 11th April, 2008 “Buddy’s Day” was introduced in the special Lower Primary School, which will help in instilling responsibility, caring, tolerance, respect and will also encourage and enhance reading skills in the students. The Buddy scheme connects a Lower Primary Pupil with a student - ‘Buddy’ from the older age groups in a way that is mutually beneficial. The senior ‘Buddy’ interacts with the junior student in a number of ways from helping in reading out stories, guiding in picture stories and listening to the little ones read. The junior is instilled with a sense of belonging and security, while being presented with a role model worthy of imitation. The senior student acquires the invaluable experience of mature responsibility and compassionate caring at the same time giving the older ‘Buddy’ an experience of Leadership. It was a one of a kind activity for the Junior ‘Buddies’ and it made it more exciting when they were presented with bookmarks and stars to commend their effort, by the Senior ‘Buddies’. This is just the beginning of Friends For Life…

The day was especially dedicated to science education but they learnt much more like:-

• Science:-Classifying groceries accordingly

• Math:- Paying and receiving the change (subtraction)

• English/Kiswahili:- Communicating while buying fruits and vegetables

Parents were familiarized with the new system in the administration structure of the Lower Primary Schools and both Lower Primary Deputies, Mrs. Lateefa Moloo and Mrs. Masuma Mushtaq were introduced to the Parents. The different teaching and learning styles including thematic approach, differentiated learning, rules and regulations relevant to uniforms, discipline and usage of diaries was explicated.

Weaving the future on the loom of today….. Both the Primary Schools have embarked on an extensive program which would challenge the students according to their level and needs keeping in mind the diverse changing society.

A question and answer session followed, which gave the parents perspective of the work that was being done at school. After the vote of thanks, parents were requested to fill in a Parents Questionnaire asking for their views regarding the system, concept and timings of the school, followed by individual meetings with teachers of respective grades.

Children are remarkably perceptive. Their eyes ever observe, their ears ever listen and their minds ever process the messages they absorb.

INTRODUCTION OF SALAAT

As we all know, one of the acts of worship that Islam attaches immense importance and significance to, is salaat – a fact that can be comprehended by the tradition of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.) which says: ‘Salaat’ is the pillar of religion.

Alhamdullilah with the grace of The Almighty and your support, the facilities of Salah have now been completed and from Wednesday 10th October 2007, students along with teachers have started praying at school.

To avail students this opportunity of saying congregational prayers in school, current facilities for Wudhoo had to be renovated. We now have beautiful tiled washing areas that comfortably cater for wudhoo activities.

The positive response from many parents has been very encouraging and we are sure that this introduction will serve to enhance the unity and spiritual growth of our girls.

Child Friendly Evaluation
Grade 1 2008

The Al Muntazir Primary Schools “Grade 1 Child Friendly evaluations” were held on Saturday 8th September 2007 for students coming from Al Muntazir Union Nursery School and 15th September 2007 for students coming from other schools.

The first part of the application procedure was an informal meeting of each set of parents with the respective school principals - Mrs Abdulrasul and Mr Ogaja. The meetings gave the principals an opportunity to meet the parents of prospective students, introducing them to the Al Muntazir Schools and evaluation procedure. This will serve to set the foundation for a strong school-parent partnership for the betterment of the pupil.

2008 intake will be based on an assessment of the overall child and skills learnt. The evaluation exercise catered for approximately 12 pupils per group and included activities revolving around listening skills, fluency of speech, reading, interaction with age mates and teachers, independence as well as numeracy and literacy levels.

The results will be released on Monday September 24 and parents are requested to check at the respective schools.

Al Muntazir Week Celebrations at Girls Primary School

The girls have enjoyed the week thoroughly and Friday the 31st was the Grand finale!

This year we used the theme of Sports & Extra-curricular activities. Under this theme we have learnt about fitness of various kinds – spiritual, physical, social & mental.

The little ones have tried their hands at tug-of-war, block busters and as well as learnt important social behaviours and du’as. The Grades 4 & 5 have enjoyed working in groups, solving puzzles and learning the history of our Imam whilst our older girls have participated in quizzes, treasure hunt & also played a netball match. All the hard work and effort revolved around keeping ourselves fit to serve The Mahdi when He re-appears. Ameen.

A large number of parents attended the assembly in which we had the flag raising led by our Guest of Honour - Mrs Batul Bai Lalji. She was accompanied by a team of volunteers from the Mosque and the Mehfil.

The program included short poems by the students as well as presentations of medals for the Sports Day and the crowning of the Spelling Bee winners for 2007. It was then time to include the parents in the fun and the girls were thrilled to see their moms and dads participate in fun games that won them prizes and lots of cheer from the excited audience.

It has been a great ending to a wonderful week of excitement!

Al Muntazir Spelling Bee 2007

After 3 long weeks of Spelling Words with so much of accuracy, we narrowed down the spelling champions from top 50 to top 10 and finally to top 3 from every grade.

The first round was written and the others were oral.

In the final rounds, the students were tested on surprise lists. Though it was challenging and the stakes were higher, the buzzing spellers showed amazing skills and gave their teachers a hard time as they had to test them on several tie-breaker rounds.

Finally we emerged with our champion spellers and these were proudly crowned at the Friday assembly held in celebration of the birth of our Living Imam Mahdi. (ATFS)

Congratulations to all our winning Bees as well as the teachers and parents who all worked hand in hand on the Al Muntazir Spelling Bee 2007.
